←House rules · non-negotiable

No sex tourists.

This is not a suggestion and it is not negotiable. Read it before you book a bed with us.

Let us be 100% clear

If you bring a sex worker back to a Mad Monkey hostel, we will ask you to leave.

If the sex worker is underage, we will report you to the authorities — and follow up to be sure you are held responsible.

Do not stay with us if you are a sex tourist.

Aside from the moral implications, commercial sex in parts of Asia has alarmed the World Tourism Organization because of its negative impact on society. The prevalence of sex tourism has encouraged foreign men to visit the region and meet local girls for sex.

These men often do not realise that:

  1. These exchanges are physically unsafe for everyone involved. At least 3 in 10 sex workers in Southeast Asia are not regularly checked for STDs.
  2. Many sex workers in Southeast Asia — though of course not all — have a drug dependency that the trade perpetuates.
  3. Prostitution in many countries, Cambodia included, is illegal and can carry a custodial sentence.
  4. Sex sting operations are common: workers steal from clients, and may extort them later.
  5. Many sex workers in the region are effectively slave prisoners of criminal gangs, or trapped in a cycle of economic slavery.
  6. Every dollar spent in the sex industry increases demand and perpetuates the misery behind it.

How it starts

The sex trade has come to be seen as a quick way to earn money, and sex tourism has become part of modern culture in Southeast Asia. Parents who are unemployed, or dependent on drugs or alcohol, have often allowed their children into the trade because they believe it can save them from poverty. In the worst cases, children are sold into slavery to pay off debts.

Where we stand

We do not condone any part of the sex industry.

Anyone who participates in it is not welcome on our properties. We will do everything in our power to apprehend any child abuser we come across, and pursue prosecution.

Seen something at one of our hostels? Tell the front desk straight away, or email us — day or night.
